Is there an A/C vent nearby blowing on it? As I said, a rapid change in temperature can shatter glass.

quote:

Changes in temperature cause glass to expand and contract, and when this is done at different severities across the glass with the edges and centres changing in opposite directions, the pane is put under stress which can cause it to break.

Not really. There’s a vent at the top of the stairs but it doesn’t blow directly into the window. Also haven’t sprayed it with water lately bc we’ve been using the soaker hoses for flower beds instead of sprinklers.

Did the glass initially fall into the house or outside? If it fell outward then it probably wasn't broken from the outside.

North Texas clay/house settling. Do you water properly around your foundation?

Looks like only the outer glass is broken. Interior glass seems to still be intact.

Don’t those windows have some sort of gas in between the layers of glass?

It’s the size of the window combined with the very thin glass used in residential windows. A glass person with ethics would have talked someone out of doing that. But for some reason we have an economy that hates expertise and rewards Half a$$erie.

For about four hundred years it’s common knowledge that large pieces of glass crack. That’s why the small diamond shapes were popular.
