He's from Bakersfield. Most place in Cali that are inland are a bit country. A lot of red counties over there. Kern county even has it's own style of country music.

Never been to Cali myself, but i've heard this from a ton of family that live out that way. Outside of the major mega-blue cities, most of California is pretty blue collar. Lots of outdoorsy, hunting/fishing type folks.
