Only jaguars have the black pigment gene.

Not true at all. Jaguars and leopards both can be melanistic. As can all the other species belonging to the Panthera genus like lions.

Not a panther which is a separate species.

True. One odd thing about this debate I've always found kinda funny is both jaguars and leopards (along with lions and tigers) are in the "Panthera" genus. While actual panthers (mountain lion, cougar, etc) are in the "Puma" genus.

It’s bullshite likely jags from Mexico or mixes. Camera footage comes in on them every year.

We've had'em around here (SC) since I was a kid in the 50s and 60s.

Damn near ran over one in my VW bug in 69 crossing the Saluda hwy near the Travis memorial ... he was chasing a buck out into a cornfield.

My grandpappy killed one, although she was more brownish mix, in 58. Shot her out of a pecan tree with his 1911.

Occasionally they'll show up on modern deer and trail cams around here.

No you haven’t. Unless someone turned a Jaguar or leopard loose. The cats in North America don’t have the gene to be black. Jaguars are coming back across the border into Arizona but you damn sure didn’t see a black one in the 60’s or ever

They're jaguars. Whole area (Gulf Coast) used to be within their natural range.

That's probably a jaguar. Black panthers are like Bigfoot. They don't exist.

Every other person in Mississippi has either seen one or has a crack head uncle who has seen one. No evidence or specimen has been produced.

In the plateaus between rankin and Iraan tx I saw something early one morning with a small deer by the side of the road. It was very dark and had a long tail. Not a house cat too big. I thought it was a jaguarundi but they are very rare to be seen that far east. And they head didn’t look that small like in all the pics. Of course it was still bad lighting and driving 70

Finally. Something is LEAVING this country instead of sneaking in

I have seen two in my life, had a witness with me on the second one.
Call it a panther or jaguar whatever. Large black cat.

Either way, it’s still a big arse freaking black cat

Well yeah, but there aren’t really any big cats that are black. When you look at them more closely you can usually see the faint spots.

These are spotted cats.

I've had a game cam out every day and night for the last 20 years in the pearl river basin on the northshore. That's 7305 days including leap years. I have never had a pic of the animal referred to as the "black panther", which is nothing more than a melanistic jaguar or leopard.

I swear I saw a dead black panther on side of I-10 somewhere between the Blind River bridge and the Sorrento exit.

It's possible. There's always an unusual amount of dead animals, trash, and shredded 18 wheeler tires in that area

Shut up! This is utter nonsense. We do not exist. I mean…they do not exist.

In regards to the video, looked like it still had the umbilical cord connected to it when she found it.

I’d guess leopard based off of the huge tail.

I saw one walk out on my lane while deer hunting when I was around 12 in North Louisiana. This was about 1993. He came from my right within 75 yards. Stopped and looked around for a few seconds and then slowly continued on into the woods. That is one time I wish that camera phones were a thing back then. There is no mistaken a black panther in broad daylight and in the open for any other animal. Didn’t get down from my stand until my cousin came looking for me.
