If your wife chooses UTSW, i'd seriously consider Richardson. $450k will get you a nice ranch house. It won't be brand new, but the lots are big, mature trees, RISD is excellent. You're close to 75/635/DNT.
The Dart rail runs down 75. The city is older, but it's not rundown. Many great restaurants, bars, things to do etc.
