70 lbs 8 yo female English bulldog. Believe it or not, I worked with her on blood trailing as a puppy and she will blood trail all day.

Clyde do you have any recommendations on where to hunt in North Texas?

TX doesn't have a lot of public land, and most of the private land is leased for deer. So it's either pony up for a bird lease (ridiculous), join or know someone with a deer lease that has birds (most practical), or try to day lease through an outfitter.

I have a pudelpointer also. I've hunted quail, duck, but mostly use him now for tracking. My colorblind self can't see blood on grass unless it's a murder scene. God help me if it's raining at all. Watching him work to find my deer is something else.

Long haired dachshund, border collie mix. She doesn't hunt, but loves to go fishing.

I didn’t answer my own question: I have a Deutsch Drahthaar that I hunt woodcock/quail/pheasants, ducks, rabbits, and blood track with and a 8 year old Labrador that is a retired duck dog with 2 bad ACL’s.

I love seeing the PP, WPG, and GSPs that y’all are using for versatile hunting dogs as well.

Boykin Spaniel, He sits in the box stand with me and he does pretty good tracking although I called the real trackers when my daughter shot a good nine point this past weekend.

Look at that smile!

You sound like you are trying your damnedest to convince yourself of something that deep down you know just isn’t true. Just my opinion of course.

Did you do anything special to train them to find rabbits too?
I’ve shot rabbits jumped by my GSP but she was usually far away and didn’t see me shoot them. Once she half pointed and chased one while we were shooting pen raised birds l, but we didn’t shoot because someone with us said “don’t shoot rabbits over a bird dog”
I don’t really care. I want my dog to be versatile.

Drahthaars go through a series of breed tests to be certified for breeding. The first one is the “puppy test” and includes tracking a live rabbit and pointing a bird. As a young puppy I bought some pet rabbits and let him track them short distances before he produced and chased the rabbit. Once he connected the smell to the sight chase of the rabbit it was easy to make the distances further. From there it’s just been natural ability.

I would assume somebody told you that because they think the dog will only look for rabbits instead of birds when bird hunting. Mine has pointed a woodcock and tracked a rabbit 5 minutes later before pointing another woodcock.

That’s exactly why.
My GSP is turning 5, I think she’d be able to do both interchangeably. She seems to always know what I want her to find.

If I want my dog to point a bird and he produces a rabbit or vice versa, I’m not going to be mad.

Standard Rat Terrier. Jam up falconry dog that Qs off the bells like a champ, makes squirrels pick their poison when they try to go to ground and will get in the mess for a jump when she smells a rabbit. Fair straight up squirrel dog and a trouble free house dog

Another Pudelpointer here. She is about to turn 1 and has been doing well with doves and starting upland, but is struggling with water. She went into heat the day before teal season opened, I am hoping big duck will be better.
