Is the problem with defense personnel or coaching/scheme?

Or a combination of both?

It’s a combo

Injuries top it off

It’s House. Every other problem stems from that.

It’s a combo of both, but the absurdity of defensive performance is on coaching. No reason why these, who are legitimate D1 athletes, can’t play better than they have. We need depth and talent, but the constant busts in coverage, poor tackling and soft defense overall is on coaching.

I don't understand why we can't come up with a scheme that keeps Perkins as a rusher. He seems to drop into coverage 75% of the time.

Coaching. Perkins and defensive line should be good. Entire defense looks lost. Playing Penn and Speights makes defense way too slow. Defense with Perkins on one side and Weeks on other should be pretty darn good. Won't play Weeks. Just terrible.

Well look. This defense wasn't EVERY gonna be good. You can't be "good" in college football with zero legit cover corners. The coach is forced to make too many concessions in how he plays defense just to avoid a bomb fest.

That said. Stuff like not even ensuring rushers stayed in their lanes against Alabama was asinine. Heck, Bama didn't even have to beat our DBs. If you're a coach in such a situation, you have to pick your poison. Get after the QB and hope the DBs don't get beat or, keep QB in pocket and zone like a MFer. Somehow we did the perfect blend of neither.

Primarily coaching. Fix this and you fix the rest.

It’s both plus injury (and suspensions/quitters)

But I blame defensive coaching more. House has done nothing to mitigate the subpar talent and his scheme seems to have hurt the development of key players.

the easiest answer to your question is that there are group of 5 teams without a single 4 star in the roster that have a better defense than us

It’s a combo for sure. People don’t want to admit it, we are young and injuries have made our depth super thin. Our DL is not good at all, may be one of the worst I can recall.

But, don’t let that take away that house hasn’t figured it out. No down and distance is safe with his defense at all. LBs always look out of position, tackling is sub par.

Mostly personnel… watching Georgia and Tennessee. Even USC and UCLA. The defensive backs and linebacker actually tackle

We are down to freshman DBs. Portal guys hurt or not good enough. Our linebackers flow to the wrong Gaps. We cannot get a pass rush.

The spread offenses are way ahead of the defenses. You must tackle on first contact.

I do think Kelly will get LSU there

If all he does is rush, teams can scheme him out of the equation.

He should rush more, but he’s actually probably been our best pass defender except for maybe Zy

It’s because they have so little faith in the DB corps to cover the field.

They’re doing that anyway. Just tell whoever Perkins is covering to go vertical and it takes him away from the play.

That may work if we are playing nothing but man coverage

Good coaches scheme around talent issues.

House is awful and has no business being a DC at a P5 unless he works for a former DC head coach

Even in zone, Perkins gets caught between choosing to take the QB or stick with his zone assignment. He’s by himself trying to contain the QB and cover the field at the same time. Speights can’t get to the sideline and the end/Jack can’t set the edge if their life depends on it.
