My wife has a “fancy watch” (Cartier Must), but she’s really fascinated by my automatic/mechanical watch so I wanted to get her one too but also something more fun and casual. Found this French brand that seems to fit the bill: Charlie de Paris Initial 36 Guilloché . Got it for ~$500.

Anyone know much about these? Again, wanted something more casual/everyday and where you can see the mechanical action (including second hand). At this price I know it’s not high or even medium end, but did I buy a piece of crap?

It is a bit of an optical illusion but the face is also (purposefully) on the large side because I heard her mention once that she thinks large watch faces on women “can look fun.”

ETA: it’s 36mm

Never heard of it.

But at $500 it's probably ok as long as your expectations aren't terribly high. It's not a well known name that's going to give you any "cache" (ala Cartier, Rolex, etc). It looks like it has a Japanese movement similar to those used in mid-priced Timex, Bulova, Citizen, watches.

If she likes it and appreciates it that's all that really matters. Relative to what some watches can cost, $500 is not that much. I'd rather buy someone a $500 watch that they love and wear all the time v. a $5,000 watch that they don't like and just wastes away in a dresser drawer

That's the boyfriend watch trend.

If it is actually 36mm it isn't large for the average woman's wrist given they can carry off bigger "jewelry" than men.

Since it is already purchased I will refrain from further comment.

For anyone looking for for a round watch for women at a lower price point I suggest the Longines Primaluna and the Bulova Regatta. They are both quartz and I would have to think of alternatives for a mechanical one. That said there are a lot of watches being produced that take inspiration from the Rolex Oyster Perpetual which really fits the bill IMO.

The Citizen Tsuyosa is a great automatic watch available in multiple colors, has an automatic movement and balances inspiration from the Oyster Perpetual and the integrated bracelet trend brought back to life by the popularity of the Patek Nautilus and AP Royal Oak. At 40mm it is big enough to look like it was chosen to be big on purpose and can be had under $300.

This is the ice blue which fits into the Tiffany Blue/Turquoise/lt. blue trend that has been huge since Patek introduced the Tiffany blue dial on their very last run of the 5711 Nautilus.

It is a microbrand that may be starting to get some traction. I had never heard of them until a couple of months ago. Christopher Zerone mentioned the maker on his Theo and Harris YouTube channel. I think he perhaps visited their HQ on a recent trip to Paris.

Eta Movements, Sapphire crystal, looks like a reasonable price point for a Rose Gold PVD stainless steel case. Most of their watches don't fit my taste, but I definitely wouldn't call them ugly. Also that 36 mm size is not large at all, though the minimal bezel and the outward inclining chapter ring lend to the illusion of a big dial. I think the blue-green strap goes well with the RG tone and I like the guilloche white dial, though I'm not a big fan of cutouts on the front of the dial to expose parts of the movement.

You obviously know its not in the same stratosphere as Cartier (which has seriously been making a play to recoup former glory as of late), but no problem at all for a fun watch for a change of pace.

Does not look like an eta movement. Looks like a Chinese movement.

So much they got right about this watch except the eccentric crown at 4 o'clock, and to me it woulda been better at 38 mm. Colors are great though.

My go to in cheap autos is the Orient Bambino 38 mm. Only things I don't really like about that watch are the mineral crystal - looks good, but I wonder about durability and the straps look fine from a distance, but are stiff and just not great quality. It is otherwise a classic and they just came out with quartet of special editions for the holidays that in clude a robin's egg blue and a muted salmon dial. 38 mm, but wears like a vintage watch. With discount floating around can be had for around $280

The one in the picture is a Miyota, not sure which one but it is in the 90/91 series so it is 28.8k bph and this one is designed for an open heart dial. Basically the same architecture as a 9015.

Great watch but I didn't mention it because I thought they were very limited production in the colors and assumed they would be hard to source now without paying a secondary market premium. I could be wrong on that.

It doesn’t look as huge on the pics from the website.

I think the watch is nice, but I’m not a fan of the peacock color band.

I can't stand wearing a watch, but that thing looks enormous. There is nothing feminine or dainty about that monstrosity.
