think the disconnect we are having is that we are reading what she conveyed differently. While you read it as the above, I read it as “I thought taking a walk in silence was going to be awful because I wouldn’t be able to shut down my brain without a distraction, but I ended up really enjoying it”, with no implication that the idea of going on a walk, in and of itself, was in any way scary or anxiety inducing. Eta: Not saying my interpretation is the correct one; I’m simply pointing out what I perceive to be the difference.
I think the truth is probably somewhere in the middle. The need for attention (even from strangers) is so strong in the young ones it has to be at least a partial driving factor in it.

I don’t disagree. Though I’ll say that my perception is that the need for attention is strong in humans in general. There’s a reason my FB feed is cluttered with middle aged people. The difference with “young” people is that this is all they have ever known, so it’s normalized to them. I’m in my mid to late 30s and the idea of broadcasting details of my life to people on social media isn’t just foreign to me; it’s unpleasant. But I didn’t have access to social media until I fed my LSU email address into FB back when it was only for college students. Kids growing up now think it’s normal to have the world at large not only know, but react to, everything you do and think. That’s not really their fault, though. They just happened to be the first generation to not remember a world before social media. Sucks for them, in my opinion. I think the generation that comes after them will likely have a healthier relationship with social media and the internet in general.
Or we’re headed towards Blade Runner or Neuromancer or A Brave New World or whatever is one’s dystopia of choice
