The Details:

Teenage driver, had DL for one month and was pulled over for speeding 85 in a 55.

Could've been cited for reckless driving, but was only ticketed with 80 in a 55.

Consequences Enforced Effective Immediately:
*Take the car from said teen until court date
*Grounded until court date
*Took away gaming laptop
*Required teen to spend time in common areas of house / not allowed to just hole up in the bedroom.

Sufficient, too much, or need further consequences?

This would be the very first time said teen has ever been in any sort of trouble and teen is an A/B student and not a general shitass. He does stink however

This Thread also doubles as the Lunch Thread that never happened today so- charcuterie board for lunch and w1 currently.

I have told my teen repeatedly that any ticket gets her car taken away. 80 in a 55 should face some serious consequences.

Sounds like a good punishment to me. Especially if he’s generally a good kid. He’s realized he’s fricked up with this one.

This is what my parents did when I made a bad decision driving: made me pay for my own car insurance. I was still on their policy, but I had to pay the difference for me to be on the policy.

I’m not a fan of just restrictions, as in I think doing actual work whether it be chores, a job, volunteer, etc. Making the punishment staying busy doing something they don’t want to do.

But, why was he speeding? Just wanted to go fast? Showing off? Etc?

I went 132 in HS. Not proud of it, it was over a 3 mile bridge when I got off at like 11pm at night from my job so relatively safe…but…not abnormal for a teenager to do.

Taking away gaming thing and grounded is sufficient inho.

I'd make him pay the fine with his money that he earned not from money given to him.

I'd also beat his arse.

If possible take him to a place that deals with Traumatic Brain Injuries so he can see what could happen as a result of crashing at high speeds.

The problem is kids that age think nothing can/will happen to them.

Way too harsh imo.

Kids will make mistakes. Cut him some slack if he’s been a good kid.

I would recommend restricting driving to school/work for a few weeks and he pays for ticket.

I got a ticket about a month after I got my first car when I was 16.

My parents told me that I knew better than that. That they had paid for me to have a car. They were going to have pay the ticket until I paid them back in the summer and maybe would have to pay increased insurance.
Total guilt trip but I felt really bad.

I actually have never gotten another speeding ticket and I'm 45.

I initially read "WWJD," which puts a different meaning on it.

Being a parent of teenagers will age you 2 years to 1. Sorry dad.

I think I would do:
• Grounded (as in, not only no car, but no one is taking him anywhere) until court date except for whatever work he might be doing (if he’s able to pay a ticket, sounds like he may be working?)
• Can’t use the car for any purpose besides work until he pays off the ticket (or if he can walk to work, get rides, etc., no car use at all until ticket paid)
• If insurance rates go up due to this, he has to cover the difference as a condition of continued driving

Still a strong message sent, but it’s all directly tailored to what he actually did wrong, he has to work to earn his driving privileges back so he can directly see how much that sucks and it treats him more like an adult (which I know he isn’t yet, but he’ll buy into the lesson you’re trying to teach him better).

Too much.

you aren't really correcting behavior for the most part. the most important thing is to make him/her drive with you in there driving at appropriate speeds.

maybe limit gaming and being alone but wouldn't make it all the time.

seems like maybe you didn't train enough.

I have raised 5 young men to adulthood. I have seen it all, done it all and made all the mistakes. First thing is, they are all(most anyway) gonna try it. Some get caught, yours did. Certainly some punishment is deserved, even severe punishment. About the only thing I would say is, make it hurt, just not for a long drawn out time. Spank em, turn ‘em loose.

were we not just talking about a dead teenage girl who made a bad decision just a week ago today? Kids and cars can be very dangerous.

Make his arse ride the bus, I wouldn't give him the car back for a long time, I liked no phone no computer no TV and he has to stay in common areas of the house and he is grounded.
