He's been a white hot name for like 3 years and only hasn't really tried to get hired as HC because this has been the plan

Mayo has five years of coaching experience and zero years of coordinator experience. Guy screams Mike Singletary 2.0.

Really like Mayo but this is risky as hell

We’re 4-13 with not a whole lot of young talent on the books, what’s the risk? And is hiring a retread really mitigating that risk?

LMAO!! phew, Vrabel at the Pats would have been scary.

Vrabel:

-4 winning seasons out of 6 as a head coach
-Playoff coaching experience with playoff wins under his belt
-NFL coach of the year, just two seasons ago.

Jerod Mayo:

-No head coaching experience
-No Coordinator experience
-Didn't even call the plays as a position coach with New England
-Named after a condiment

Vrabel wouldn't have been a retread in a traditional sense, and there's a difference between hiring a guy who's been a true coordinator for a couple of years and Mayo who shared that duty with Steve. We shall see, but I have a nasty feeling we are just going to internally promote a GM and continue down Bills path without Bill.

Rapaport saying Mayo replacing Belichick was actually written into his contract.

Oh so if you’re hiring a black guy, cool, but if you’re thinking about hiring a white guy, you better interview a black dude.

He is by definition a retread. Don’t get me wrong, he was my second favorite choice behind Mayo if we went “internal” for the replacement. The negatives to Vrabel are the same negatives that BB had the last few years. Good coaching failed by a bad roster exasperated by stubborn old coaching thought .

I also wasn’t very excited about the prospect of our new rookie QB going out there and running Authur smiths. But we’ll see if Mayos choice is better.

It’s basically the new template for HCs. Young guys under established systems with fresh ideas and processes

And I feel good about it not being that situation because the local media/internal sources the last few weeks have been dropping these hit pieces on Mayo, which tells me those old guard guys wanted Vrabel to continue to dog and pony show. I think Vrabel is much more of a risk if you’re concerned about things being the same old thing. He’s brash but he’s also pretty conservative outside of a 2point conversion here or there and still runs and offense that would make Bo Schembelcker cream his pants

As much hand wringing this board does about retread hires and the same guys getting cycled through, it’s funny to see that fall right through when a team doesn’t just pick a name off the top of the obvious coaching name pile

This was done solely for the purpose of skipping the hiring process and naming a successor quickly. Vrabel was probably on the wish list, but they would have had to go through a pool of candidates and several rounds of interviews. That being said...someone is about to score big time when they hire Mike Vrabel.

Huh

He had a contract with the Pats that he would be the next HC. It wasn’t secret

Put your sword down.

You can avoid the Rooney Rule entirely, regardless of the race of the coach, if you establish it in writing and tell the NFL before the move happens

The pats did this a year ago when they reworked BB and Mayos contract and Mayo pulled himself from consideration of other jobs in the last cycle

You think they got something better to do? it’s not like they have to hit the recruiting trail, the season doesn’t end for another month.

They made the call to hire Mayo a year ago.

Crazy how he looks older while playing for the Pats than coaching them.

A black head football coach in Boston. I'm sure the city is ecstatic.
