i'm actually amazed that Fincher went on to have the career he did because A3 was his only career miss in my mind and it was a BIG miss

Alien 3 is arguably the second best of the franchise. I will always defend the frick out of that movie. I love it and think it’s legit great. But I know I’m in the very small minority who thinks that.

Baloo and I were the only two I remember that love A3.

Watched this last night not even knowing it was an Alien movie. Had watched Covenant a year or so ago and thought the David character seemed familiar lol.

Good.

Crazy how the first half of Scott's career is just all-time level banger after banger, then he went full retard somewhere along the way

back to Prometheus, i think a lot of the hate is because people really expected a more pure Alien backstory movie. and by "people" i am including myself. i didnt like it when i first saw it and actively campaigned against it until i watched it again a few years later and found myself really liking it. it's a weird arse movie, to be sure, but i think it's a cool flick.

100%. Prometheus was marketed as an Alien prequel and that’s what I was expecting going in. Because of that, I was disappointed by it (and the convoluted xeno origin).

That said, I agree it was cool and entertaining as a stand-alone movie.

Ridley Scott got offered a lot of money for an Alien prequel; Ridley Scott could not come up with a plot; so, Ridley Scott shoe horns H.P. Lovecraft's At the Mountains of Madness plot into an Alien prequel resulting in a movie that neither harmonizes with nor compliments the other movies.

Tony had a shorter career but was waaaayyyy more consistent. not award nominated or lasting movies, but action movies that can be enjoyed on repeat (except for maybe Man on Fire.)

and in the last 15 years ridley has The Martian, Last Duel, and All the Money in the world. so not all bad....

but he also has Napoleon, Robin Hood, and the Counselor.

Noah Hawley says his Alien prequel series will ignore the backstory provided by Alien: Covenant and Prometheus.

Ok, Star Wars. You're up next. You know what the right thing to do is. Now you just have to do it.

I enjoyed Prometheus. I remember the original film review thread, one of the most polarizing on here ever. Really no middle ground, either really enjoyed it or hated it.

I liked A3 but no way can I put it above the first two. I could see if you maybe consider A2 a straight up action thriller with A1 and A3 being more of the horror genre.

Funny I was going to reference Baloo, too, but neither of us referenced each other

I will defend Alien 3 to the death

I love all the Alien movies, even Prometheus and Covenant. I actually thought Covenant was a better "Alien" movie than Prometheus. Anything with xenomorphs in it makes me happy. That being said, this seems like really good idea for the tv series. The Prometheus-style origin story was weak.

I’m just realizing that James Franco now really died for nothing in the opening to Covenant.

Same. I'm big on the A3 train. I think it's a legit good movie.

When they took off their helmets in the alien ship I groaned. Ship full of scientists... hey let's expose ourselves immediately to whatever's in the atmosphere....

Right? As if two scientists would get scared, just say "I'm outta here", abandon the rest, then get stuck there all night? And another of my biggest beefs with Alien movies (and other Sci-Fi flicks) is that these missions are often accompanied by the most undisciplined groups of Marines or whatever military outfit imaginable. Bill Paxton's character in A2 was funny and entertaining but ridiculous.

Otherwise...all great popcorn flicks.

That’s part of it for sure for me. And don’t get me wrong, I like Aliens. A lot. It was just so completely different from the first one that it didn’t “fit” if that makes sense. It’s so over the top action-y and I preferred the slow burn of the original.

A3 gets back to that feel. I like the slow burn of it. I LOVE the setting. I love the whole cat and mouse plan and execution. It gets back to creepy and horror which Aliens got away from a good bit.

I always contend that had the marketing for A3 not implied that it would take place on Earth, it would’ve been much better received by the public. They did drop the ball on that one.

Prometheus was a Phantom Menace level disappointment. There were so many characters and so many of them were stupid. The trailers gave away the entire movie. And you're making a fan service prequel but you don't quite connect everything to Alien? That's just trolling the audience.
I thought Covenant was crap the first time I saw it, then I watched it again and enjoyed it thoroughly. I'm pretty basic when it comes to the Alien series - I like to watch blue collar folks/the military have to deal with this killing machine at the same time they're getting fricked over by a giant, evil soulless company. I don't need a philosophy lecture about the origins of life.
I'm pretty excited about the TV series - Noah Hawley is 2-for-2 when it comes to adapting things for FX. And there's good buzz about the movie coming out in August.
