I thought the same thing. Especially with the MacArthur comment. But I wasn't sure so I didn't say anything. That's where I went to HS though. Been to that Daiquiri Hut many times.

i worked as a security guard for a time

it was the easiest job ever, they hard part was having nothing to do but stare out of a window for 12 hours and try not to fall asleep. some others even brought TVs to watch, but today im sure they can just use their phones to watch movies.

so it was getting paid pretty well, to literally do nothing and try not to fall asleep

I'd have to say being in the Army was probably my favorite
I wouldn't say the army itself was the coolest, but a specific job I had in the army was: Honor Guard. I hesitate to describe it as fun because most of it centered around funerals, but we did other things that were fun, like drill competitions against other services, going to major league games, or traveling all over the western half of the country (albeit, usually for funerals). We also performed salutes with 105 howitzers for some occasions which was always fun for me (always entertaining to watch the entire crowd jump when you fired the first round even after warning them it would be loud ).

And even if I wouldn't use the word fun to describe it, the funeral side provided a great deal of satisfaction. Mastering silent drill, practicing until the rifle team sounded like a single shot every volley, and just providing what you knew was flawless military honors for families, especially (this was 04-05) when we did 'full honors' ceremonies for active duty KIA.

I used to work construction in the summers during college. Got my forklift operator certification and some other heavy equipment certifications. After college, for the year or so before I got a job in my area of study I got a job driving a forklift and operating other heavy machinery, mostly highlifts and dozers.

Don't know why, but that was some seriously satisfying work. Loved showing up and leveling land and loading large items going out to sites. Even did a golf course renovation during my time. Paid very well too. When I got a job in my field from college, I took a HUGE reduction in pay, my first job made maybe 1/3 of what I was making operating machinery.

As I sit in the office, doing my standard corporate job, I'll sometimes daydream about doing that kind of work again. Got to work with some wild folks, no PC corporate bullshite, had a lot of laughs and did some hard damn work on a bunch of different projects. It was a good time.

I took an onsite engineering internship for a summer while in college, working on a large stadium. I ended up spending more than half my time making friends with the blue collar workers and learning how to operate machinery. I spent one week picking up debris with a giant excavator and loading it into dump trucks while some ol' baw chipped away at a giant rock. Also had access to a UTV where I just made laps all day. I still don't know what my actual role was that summer.

Post college I had a project engineer gig on a large bridge project spanning a couple of miles, basically coordinating concrete pours and doing purchasing/scheduling. It was fun to get lost on the job site and goof off. I wasn't ready for the 50+ work hours though.

Coolest - working at a summer camp in North Carolina. Beautiful area, fun co-workers,no responsibility.

But as a stove-up older guy, I look back on most of the manual labor jobs I had when I was younger. Machine shop, packing house, wildlife and forestry management, landscaping, and some restaurant jobs to boot. My co-workers were funny as frick, and we looked out for each other. We worked hard and partied hard. Same kind of folk I grew up with, and it always just worked out because we all had similar experiences from when we were kids and teenagers.

My viewpoint is skewed because I currently work with a collection of yo-yos who never had to work for anything, and as a result, have absolutely no concept of how anything works.

I miss the old days.

Security at the short-lived Club Karma in Lafayette.

I had a stint of security jobs around the Lafayette area. This was the best. They put me on the door at first, figuring I was a good fit there because I was much older than my co-workers.

At the beginning, the club owners wanted to keep it preppie and they told me not to let in people with baggy jeans. I really didn't give a shite who came in, so when they told me not to let in people with baggy shirts, I balked and they moved me to VIP.

I made a lot of money in tips just standing in front of the VIP section and slapping five and dapping or dabbing or whatever. Josh Reed gave me some huge tips.

Then I pissed off one of the owners, got demoted to the floor, and got into a physical fracas with the head of security and was fired.

Moved down the street to Club Shakers along with Longhorn
After Hours. Would walk by Karma and insult their manager who fired me. I would request him at the front door. When he arrived, I would taunt him. I'm petty like that.

Now I'm disabled.

The end

I can't come close to passing a physical.

I've been kicking arse at the gym and I'm walking better, but I have to carry a cane to sporting events. If I'm out in the open, I need it to keep my balance.

I got to run water pipes in the USS Oak Grove Coal Mine one summer when I was in college. I was certified to 'weld' that heavy gauge black plastic pipe and was the only one that could pass the drug test to go down there. Got paid $25/hr which was big money back in 1995.

I had to go through mine safety training. Part of which was survival gear in case the mine collapsed: headlight, rebreather, etc, etc. It came with a utility belt with a metal coin and a number stamped on it. After a couple of weeks of signing out for the belt, I asked the guy where he thought I was going with his belt. There was only one way in and one way out of the mine (1000' straight down an elevator). I'll never forget his response....

"Son, you don't sign out for the gear because we think you are going to steal it. You sign out for the gear so we can ID your body when the mine collapses."

It was about 3 months after I left there that the mine had an explosion and killed some people.

Carpet installer helper. My boss knew everything about the business and I knew nothing. But I got to hang out with the coolest guy and we talked all day, took ice cream breaks and encountered a wide array of people, from Section 8 welfare queens to the mega-rich.

This thread reminded me of the phrase, "time gold plates all memories".

I worked in the oilfield doing electrical work post production. Cold, hot, sweaty, labor intensive, but free. It was my dad's business and his alone unless I helped. He passed this last June while doing that very job. Strange how I miss it sometimes.

I was an Air Traffic Controller and I miss it. Got to see some cool shite both in the military especially on deployment and outside military working traffic. It is a job that requires alot of training and studying ,but you get to see some cool shite. Presidential fleet, Fighters doing unrestricted climbs and overhead maneuvers, UAVs, loved watching anything Heavy takeoff or land especially in the rain, miss the sound of fighters, some of the challenges that come along with the job. Another cool aspect is some of the people you meet and talk with. Sometimes it was a headache or a pain in the arse ,but that is with any job.
