Three years after Jefferson Parish began burying its COVID dead, it’s building a $2.8 million memorial to them.
In what could become a larger public park in Marrero, the monument is rising from a wide, treeless field in the 5800 block of West Bank Expressway, between a row of manufactured houses on one side and a ditch on the other.
quote:
The memorial, one of the few permanent ones of its kind in the world, is intended as a tribute to the 1,400 or more Jefferson victims of COVID-19. The exact number is not known.
quote:
When Lee first announced his intention for a permanent public memorial, he envisioned two: this one in Marrero and one in Kenner. The Kenner project is still possible but is now on the back burner.
quote:
Jefferson Parish has been collecting names for the memorial, and Lee said another solicitation will be made in the coming months.
He said Jefferson residents who died of COVID-19 are eligible to be named on the memorial. But he doesn’t know how, or whether, there will be a verification process. It might be a matter of trusting the person who submits the name.

So probably only about 300 actual victims from COVID?

Wonder if that million dollar comb is going to make an appearance near that memorial.

I’m fine with it as long as they publish the ages of the 1,400 people who died of Covid on the monument.
It’s worth the money to have a permanent recording that the average age of Covid death was higher than the average age of death.

Pissing away close to $3M and laughing at us while they do it.
Not to mention total cost will probably be close the double the budget.

Notes from Jefferson Parosh covid money meeting
Yes, we have to spend some money or we lose it. A builder said he could build a memorial for 1.8 million. We will split the remaining million between us as consulting fees. All those in favor say Aye!

They better change it to “with” or there won’t be any names.

You cannot steal money that just sits in the bank, but you can steal the kickbacks from spending money!

I think you’ll see more of this around the country/world.
I see this as an attempt to make this thing more real/exaggerated than it actually was.
Building a monument/memorial to it makes it more concrete and thus more tangible. I honestly feel this propaganda for the future.
