1984 was awesome. I was a teen and started my junior HS year in the fall.

Worked at a grocery store, which seemed like a grind at the time, but I’d go back and do it again in a heartbeat. Some of my best friends worked with me there.

No real responsibility. Lots of free time. No pager, or cell phone as a leash.

Depending on the month in 1984 I was either waiting to be born or schitting in diapers.

Student at Auburn. Nobody lived a life of luxury in college. It was a simpler time.
Brother Jed and Sister Cindy tried to save us.

Got to vote for Reagan that fall.

Weirdos did not command constant positive attention.

Girls were pretty. Everyone knew the answer to “what is a woman?”
Men were men. Guys did not want to become women.

Nobody demanded that you agree with them about everything.

May be a li'l long, but it was SUCH a good time and I enjoy reminiscing about it SO much...

Spring sophomore semester at LSU... drove a HUGE green 1972 Plymouth Fury, which was a POS with no A/C but could fit me and 5 other friends in it comfortably...lived in an apartment off Gardere (back then it was brand new and not da hood it is now).. lots of fun, chasing girls, classes were easy. Every Friday after lunch we'd drive home to Metairie, meet up with UNO and high school friends and play football at Johnny Bright until about 6 pm. Then go home and shower; parents would head out league bowling and I'd eat the po-boy they'd bring me from our little grocery store, then the guys would all go out en masse... school ended and I went to work at the World's Fair for the summer... best summer of my life. Met and dated lots of girls,.. Sippin' into Sunset at the Rainforest at the top of the Hilton... parties, weekend day trips to the gulf coast, sometimes just on the beach with my Sunfish sailboat and a few friends; sometimes taking a girl out on the ferry to Ship Island... my mom finally split up with a-hole ex-stepfather for good that summer, too. Watching movies: Ghostbusters, Gremlins, Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, Liquid Sky...seeing bands; local (The Cold, The Human Rayz, Dash Rip Rock) and big time (Duran Duran, Echo and the Bunnymen, INXS). My own friends started their band (Reality Patio) up late summer... A great guys-only Florida beach trip to Ft. Walton; about 7 of us in one hotel room... polo shirts and OP shorts... late summer, getting together with the girl who would eventually become my wife and mother of my children...back to LSU in the fall for my junior year, Arnsparger takes over as football coach and we have a great year, take my new girl (she was senior in HS) up to games and out to eat before games at Round the Corner... shared a dorm room in north stadium with the future House Majority Leader (he was already my friend before that); he and I and other friends camped out overnight to make sure we got Sugar Bowl tickets... Fall semester Miami Vice started, so the new Friday night tradition became the guys would meet at one guy's house, watch the new episode at 9 pm then head put clubbing at 10 PM...Great Thanksgiving and Christmas that year without my former step-dad around.

Freaking GREAT year!!!

I was a student living in Kirby Smith and North Stadium going to panty raids, parties, working at Laville cafeteria because that's where most of the girls were; studying my butt off, working out in the old gym armory, Jerry Stovall, Bill Arnsparger, throwing frisbee on the Parade Grounds, walking to the Bengal on Higland, walking to CIBA, of course the Quad, jamming the door to the roof on Kirby so the cops couldn't get off of the roof, and exploring the tunnels under the Quad...Good times!!

In late February 1984 I was in Middle School and getting my first taste of school "real" football as we were going through Spring Training. Our coach was a sadist and fun it was not. I'm surprised no one broke their neck.
