I could be wrong, but if you were a person of notoriety, they would give you a position that you probably would not die in.

That is mostly true, but it didn’t keep Ted Williams from having his jet damaged over enemy territory, and he flew back to the base, landing without wheel gear.

I will say his wingman was no slouch

Jimmy Stewart flew a heavy bomber in unescorted deep penetration raids into Germany. Probably the most dangerous job in the war.
