Calling Cease a "very average pitcher" is a bit too reactionary to his 2023 campaign. Cease has a very high ceiling and is under team control through 25. To reach his potential, he needs to be able to throw his slider for strikes. His slider is filthy and is on par with Spencer Strider in terms of hardest pitches to hit as evidenced by his 3 straight seasons of 200+ Ks. He just could not consistently throw it for strikes early in counts in 23 like he was able to do in 22. He did finish 2nd in 2022 Cy Young voting with a 2.2 ERA, a far cry from a very average pitcher.
It's also worth noting that the White Sox might be the worst franchise in MLB recently at developing talent. It's way more likely he can reach his full potential somewhere else.

Agree with most of that. I think the key for him is his fastball and it’s been located pretty poorly and hit pretty hard. His slider is really only elite against righties. He could have a somewhat high ceiling but he’d have to fix a lot. Luckily he’ll have a damn good pitching coach in SD.
