So you're never able to take vacation because the company can't survive a day without you?

if I was doing an hour or more of work it was not a vacation day in terms of PTO

Exactly what I tell me team.

If you have 8 hours of PTO in and you do :30 minutes of work, change it to 4 hours of PTO. If you work 4 hours and 30 minutes of work, remove all the PTO.

Repeat offenders is a clear indication of those that are not handling their workload well and it steers our devleopment of them.

I'm in charge of a product that is online 24/7/365, so I do monitor work on vacation and if I have to deal with something, I deal with it.

My manager allows me the freedom to track that time and use it at my convenience, so I'm okay with it.

I am under the impression that most people work under some type of management.

they also have responsibilities, some of which cannot be shared with everyone.

So they take care of business prior to leaving or deal with it as it arises. this will probably blow your mind, but many of us work with very time sensitive things.

This is a disservice to those you work for, with and your clients / external stakeholders. Horrible company structure.

So again, what happens if you die this very minute or become incapacitated?

Same here, I’m the only one that works with a certain project. No one else, even my so called boss, would have any idea how to answer questions that come in while I’m on vacation.

It's also called wage theft and it's illegal.

I'm hesitant to call it that in a blanket statement. A lot of people in the thread have pointed out that they don't mind working on some of their vacation because their job doesn't fuss if they skip out half a day and play golf. I wouldn't say that's wage theft if they're asked to work "unpaid" or time theft if they don't take PTO to go play golf. That's just their agreement.

Now, the employers who want to have their cake and eat it too are what you're describing. Show up 15 minutes early, sit your arse at your desk so I can micromanage you until your scheduled time ends, THEN you still need to be on call? Nah.

What's the OT's take on this? Do you answer emails/texts/calls on vacation?

Only if I have a company paid for phone and even then I would only do it if I knew I was leaving in the middle of a situation. If I had planned it for months ahead of time, no way.

In my current role where I only have my personal phone and I dont get paid to use it for work, hell no. They can wait.

I know you're trying to be condescending because that's your default when people disagree with you, but I literally just described doing just this in my own job in a previous post. I also work with "time sensitive things". But I'm also human and don't live to work.

There's no job worth not ever being able to take time off.

I have 5 other co-workers that are my peers, but there are definitely some things that I know that none of them do. Some of that is simply that I've been here a lot longer than most of them.

My first 'real" job was a structural steel estimator. Did project managment, estimating, detailing, and purchasing.

Didnt matter where I was, I was "working" if a problem arose. There wasnt anyone else.

Its not self promoting, its absolutely necessary to do your job at times.

You nailed it.

Also, everyone is replaceable in this working world. No matter how good you are at your job you are replaceable so thats another reason why i would not answer if i were on vacation

If you have a major roll in the company, and haven't taken the steps to say who to go to in certain cases then you can't be pissed if they call.

If it's trivial stuff b/c the manager can't operate on their own then that's their fault. If they expect you to work on your vacation then you should immediately request a raise. You're clearly of value.

And you can't see how developing that Gen Z'er is the better option here? For you, them and the client?

That requires coaching which requires me to forward to him/her with instruction. Developing doesn’t mean ignore it and hope they do the right thing.

ETA: and unfortunately some of the “coaching” is telling them to respond with a time frame of when we’ll get them what they want. It’s amazing how many people don’t know that responsiveness just to let somebody know you received their email is kind of important.

Thats a very low level of expectation, which most of us men have crossed many times, yet you consider it "condescending."

That's disturbing within itself.

I can tell youve never really worked in a competitive environment.
