I don't want to go the poli board route here in the OT... but using that, you should be able to figure out how Houston got to this point.

My neighbor was NOPD and he retired in his early to mid 50's. He is in his mid 80's and still going strong. He gets a new truck about every 4 years. He is well taken care of...

Houston's biggest problem is that it's an hour away from Houston

Well the article you linked gives some sort of answer to your question, assuming you read it.

A lot of this could have been avoided with smarter, more fiscally responsible people managing the city during COVID. Not that it started there, but it definitely could have been remedied at that point.

Doesn’t Houston have over 20 Fortune 500 companies headquartered there? Why they broke?

I’m probably fortunate to live a couple miles north of the Harris County border along with no attachment to City of Houston.

If I remember the "Pension" situation correctly Houston was facing public worker tensions and offered both the Police and the Firefighters EITHER 1) pay raises now or 2)increases to their pensions.

Cops chose the second option.

Firefighters wanted more money now.. Then they threatened strikes until they got both via public referendum which read something along the lines of "Should we fund firefighter pensions" and every uninformed voter was like YES, of course.

Referendums need to be written in pro/con format. Stupid city of Houston also voted for an additional city tax on land owners for flood management, regardless of the fact they are ALREADY being taxed for flood management by the Harris County Flood Control District.. But of course when put to vote it was worded "should property owners pay a tax to help with flooding in Houston" right after Hurricane Harvey.
