Best of Enemies is a really great documentary on how news became not just opinion but vitriolic narrative. Conflict and division generates ratings.
ABC was dead last in ratings and was known as the place where programs went to die. For the 1968 Republican and Democratic Presidential Conventions, ABC decided to get 2 diametrically opposed people to cover the events in Gore Vidal and William F. Buckley Jr. These two were known to hate each other.
This was the beginning of modern "news."
