I have always preferred females for my hunting dogs, they just seem more focused and loyal to me. For some reason female dogs seem to respect human males way more than females, it pisses my wife and daughter off. Male dogs can be more driven but they also tend to be a little more wild and easily distracted.

Again, this is just my personal experience. I am sure other posters here will say the opposite.

I had beagles a good many years,I preferred females also. They were more focused ,hunted harder and minded better.
I did have one outstanding male dog but I had others that were kinda lazy, would hang around the edges of the briars waiting for the females to get a rabbit going.

Well, if they are intact then they are seeking pussy like a teenage boy. It’s hard to worry about fetching when you’re trying to get laid. If neutered, it’s a different story.

If you have an outstanding female, from any breed, but especially hunting,
or any other competitive Sport, you can breed her. You can find a good stud dog, they are advertised.
If you have a great male, how are you going to get pups?
I've been owning, breeding hunting beagles for over fifty years. About thirty years ago I raised a bitch, Candy. All my beagles can be traced back to her. She had hunt, line control, stamina, and great temperament.

I prefer females because they seem to stick closer and are less likely to run off.
