I haven't lived there since the late 1992 when I was in law school but have lived in or close to NC most of my life and travel to Raliegh for work fairly often.
The Triangle has a very similar outdoor culture to the more populous areas in CO. People like to be outside. If you are a big skier it might sting a little but you are about 3 hours from east coast "ice skiing", if you can set an edge on NC slopes you can ski anywhere. On the beach side you have the Outer Banks which is you like to be away from the crowd in incredible.
The food scene is good and the brewery scene is good. IMO there are better places to live in NC but it has easy access to pretty much the whole state.
