That's a fact. I had centipede at my last house and it was awful. It was probably laid over bad dirt, but I topdressed multiple times, fertilized and had a good weed control program, etc., and it never did well. Almost always looked bad and didn't recover at all from foot traffic or dog abuse.

I've got palisades zoysia at my new house. I do 2 granular premergent applications a year, 2-3 fertilizer applications, and spot spray for weeds maybe 1-2 times a year if necessary, spray fungicide in spring if needed, and it always looks good and recovers quickly. I pay a guy to cut once a week during growing season.

I have half an acre of zoysia at this current house compared to maybe 7000sqft of centipede at my last house. I probably spend 25% of the time fooling with the zoysia.

I’m convinced that if a grass isn’t aggressive then it’s not worth installing. This helps tremendously with recovery and repair.

Centipede is the ultimate beta grass and it needs to be babied accordingly.

Centipede is easy, but it just doesn’t look great.

It’s never marketed as a quality turf. Its only advantage is cost and ease of care. You can cut it once every 2 weeks and it’ll be fine. No need to fertilize.

But it’ll never look “great”.

Our weather in LA is also still a little odd for our lawns. Not really warm enough for rapid growth, but still warm enough for green up.

My front and back yards were a mix of centipede and st aug when I bought my house. Last year ALL of the centipede was coming out of dormancy when that late frost hit. It all died, like bare dirt dead. I got a few hundred celebration bermuda plugs from my dad's yard while he was gone for vacation and plugged them where the centipede was. It's awesome stuff. Less maintenance, better drought tolerance, I can treat it and not worry about it taking a month to recover. It's slowly pushing the st aug out. I'm tempted to round up the st aug and plug more of it.

I agree centipede is trash. I love st Aug but chinch bugs will wreck that arse if you don’t prepare.

I'm in BR and bought my house in 99 (was built in 94) and it had centipede...it thrived for 20 years with me doing nothing but cutting and a very occasional watering during dry spells...the only treatments I ever did was Bonus S for a couple of random springs when I got around to it (and before I knew better) but switched to 15/0/15 at half rate the last 10 years or so...in the last 2-3 years however it has slowly declined to where it's almost bare dirt in some spots (like a few other yards in my hood)

I attributed that to the severe cold combined with the drought and am hoping it might recover, but I'm thinking I might need to start over with Zoysia or something else

I had it at my last house and it is trash. It's not very green. A little bit of dog piss left a brown spot. Anyone walking in the yard left foot prints for days. I had to mow from different directions every week so the tires from my push mower weren't permanently worn in the grass. It really is a shitty grass.

I’m too about done battling it. Current location 8years and had a really great centipede lawn for years 2-5 at our house but since the past couple seasons it’s become a real PIA to take care of. This year I have fungus, severe decline, and a lot of stress from the drought last summer. Bright side is my backyard has a good bit of Bermuda that has really started to take off and take over….if it does well this year I may just over-seed the front and rest of the property with Bermuda and let it do its thing.

Best kind of grass to grow in Slidell. My centipede is brown already.
