I bought an inexpensive dwarf Alberta spruce a few years ago, which is supposedly a cultivar of Black Hills spruce. I let it dry out only briefly once during the first summer, a few leaves turned brown, and it never recovered. South Louisiana heat was possibly stressing it anyway. Put it in well draining soil, but keep it watered, and with some afternoon shade in the summer; maybe you’ll have better luck.

I too had 2 dwarf Alberta spruce and same thing happened. First year I had them in pots and kept them watered regularly and they made it through the summer but put them in ground last year and didn't water them as much and last years drought and heat finished them.

I will keep the Black Hills Spruce in containers until next fall, then plant one in ground in an area that gets morning sun but dappled afternoon shade. I'll try and keep it watered regularly during the summer heat and see if I can grow it as a specimen tree. I only paid 12 bucks for a 3+ ft. Tree so no harm no faul.
