So much has been dependent on where scientists decided to look.
The Leakey's saw the exposed rocks of Africa and found things there. A lot fewer scientists looked in the mideast and Europe around the Med. Caves were just caves, until scientists starting realizing the caves had been filled over time and they were in some cases really well preserved records.
This doesn't include what may be out on the continental shelf which was available when the Pleistocene Ice masses took up huge amounts of water and lowered sea levels. (Dogger Banks east of England)

Probably all kinds of awesome shite under the ice sheets in Antarctica too.
