Renting a place in Hawaii really isn’t bad compared to places like Hilton Head and even lots of places on the Gulf these days. The problem is the cost of flying a family of 5 to Hawaii.

I don't know if that's a "problem". Three of us got flights for roughly $1500 round trip from NOLA. For $5000 we got ten nights of accommodations, airfare and a rental car. It took some planning, took some effort, nabbed airfare well in advance but even if you tacked on another $1000 to that, it still offers more than the Gulf Coast. So sure, it will likely cost more but you get more. It doesnt change the fact that I can find accommodations in a more desirable place (for me) for the same price and cheaper in Hawaii rather than most places from Mobile Bay to Mexico Beach.
