People don't change all that much. Yes, they have experiences over life that mold them somewhat and they mature somewhat (mainly in the ability to view things outside of themselves or have better self-introspection), but at their core, they are who they are by age 18ish.

What changes in a marriage are the idiosyncrasies and peccadillos about the spouse that were once cute and unique...no longer are after 20 years. On both sides. It's how we deal with that change within ourselves that determines how unhappy or happy the rest of life with that person is going to be.
