Well actually... if that's the impression you got, then that's probably the right impression. That sort of transformation is basically what happens in the book. He'd had extraordinary training all his life with regards to combat and nobility, but he was also coddled and cared for with utmost elite consideration. It wasn't until he got to Arrakis that he finally had to deal with some of the realities of world, and eventually had to get into his first true fight, and then learn to be leader, and so on....
