Hardly ever eat out anymore. Have to go eat lunch with family for a birthday today. Just looked at the menu for Zeas. Haven’t been in a couple years. Since when is the duck $35?

Also used to be half a chicken and half rack of ribs which I could make two meals out of. Now it’s quarter and quarter. Thanks Biden!

Because grocery store visits are becoming more and more expensive and it’s cheaper now to eat out than it is at home.

I have drastically cut back eating out for many reasons.
One, the cost is outrageous.
Two, the service is generally horrible.
Three, I’m trying to eat more healthy

Mexican joints keep popping up all over the frickin' place. Can we keep just enough of them to keep the restaurants open and deport the rest? I really like Mexican food.

I don’t know where you live, but this is true everywhere I go. So many Mexican restaurants popping up like mushrooms after an early summer rain.

Tiny arse town by me has three now, about a dozen in Slidell. Very obvious what demographic is moving in.

We go through phases every few weeks of eating out less or more.
Slight lean toward less overall I guess.

You're going to have to show your work to get that dunce cap off of you.

Try being a trucker these days - vast majority of truck stops have closed their restaurants and put in fast food which is DRASTICALLY overpriced compared to regular stand alone places. Combine that with a lot of Walmarts banning truck parking and it's become a total pain in the arse to try to save while at work. I have a solid network of truck friendly grocery stores all over the country that I swing by to top off the fridge - absolutely cannot afford to eat in the restaurants anymore when there are actual restaurants.
For example - Iron Skillet in Kingdom City MO: three egg omlette, hashbrowns, ham, and coffee will set you back $30.

I do, but it has more to do with the absolutely ridiculous number of restaurants now.

I just looked at one of the busier areas near me. There are literally 55 eating joints in a three mile stretch, and more are coming in by the day it seems. That only includes options right on the road, none that may be slightly off the beaten path. Of course Google Maps shows the star rating on the map, and I'd say the average rating for them all was between 3-3.5 stars. An area oversaturated with shitty options can't help but see quite a few of them go belly up within the next few years.

If you’re a restaurant that was open pre Covid and are still standing today, there’s a good chance you’ll make it. Covid and Bidenomics have already taken care of most of the under capitalized restaurants. Traffic is predicted to be down in restaurants in 2024 due to inflation but most costs are either stabilizing or going down

Absolutely not. In Chicago, it's a nightmare trying to get a dinner reservation the week of.

I have noticed others saying the same, but the lines out the doors at restaurants at levels I didn't use to see says otherwise.

We do not eat out as much, and we generally do take-out now. The prices are a factor, but I think the main factor is that I enjoy what I prepare or what my wife prepares more than what most of the restaurants prepare. We will go try a new place now and then just to get out of the house, but not as often as we used to.

As for Mexican places, I can remember when Atlanta basically had one -- Pepe's on Ponce. Now there is one on every corner. Some are more upscale than others. That used to be a cuisine we didn't normally make, but I've been learning Mexican cooking for a couple of years now.

Besides, restaurants have always been known as great places to launder money.

Atlanta had el azteca for several years. That was a great restaurant. Are they still around?

I’m eating out less due to the cost. However, the shitty service makes the dining experience less enjoyable and don’t feel like spending a fortune to not get decent service.

There are several still around. None near me, but there's no shortage of Mexican places around me. I think all the tiendas have little abuletas in the back making tortillas and tacos and tamales and other stuff.

Many restaurants are booming

Many are, but who knows how profitable they are.
There are many chains that are having public and private struggles.

Red Lobster is going to file for bankruptcy.
Cracker Barrel is struggling.
Boston Market is closing all or most stores
Outback is closing a bunch of stores.

I know a guy that buys distressed franchises and his business is booming, People can't make ends meet with high labor costs etc.
Another friend is in the food distribution biz and says several of his customers are shutting down.

Anyway... the reality is we still eat out WAY too much, but we certainly don't go out as a family that much anymore, compared to a few years ago. It's absurd to hit a drive-thru for a family of 5 and have it be over $60.

When we go on vacation, the kids are as happy as can be just eating mac & cheese in the condo/hotel and we can avoid the $60 it probably would have cost for 3 meals for them at a vacation-priced restaurant.

I think you will see a lot of consolidation where chains no longer are compelled to have locations every few miles, and just stick to the most accessible and productive locations. I think you'll see affordable and high end restaurants do okay, but the mid-tier ones will struggle.
