They are looking to have a two tier inventory. One of high end and low end cost. Air domination of course for the high end and a cheaper option for ground and close support. They know the F-35 is a failure due to cost. The last article I read had them looking at conversions for the jet trainer and of course the F-18 among others. They know its a cost problem and are working on cheaper options.
You will also see soon a fleet of UAV mother ships carrying smaller UAV jets. A carrier in the air. It will have multiple roles. Its coming sooner than later.

Yeah, Gen 6 fighters are a manned craft commanding several unmanned craft.
Think I read where half will be manned, half will be automated.

The F-35 could destroy a squadron of f-16s before the F-16s even know it is there. The force multiplier is immense.
Even if the F-16 gets in a dogfight, the helmet display for the F-35 allows for targeting off bore shots.
When the f-35 was first reported to lose dogfights against the viper, that article failed to mention that the f-35 used wasn’t a production model, didn’t have the radar absorbing materials installed, and didn’t have the see-through fuselage capabilities production run lightnings do. When the lightning first went into a red flag exercises, they amassed 20+ to 1 kill ratios vs America’s 4th gen jets.
The lightning is a different aircraft. It can’t turn inside the viper because that isn’t what it’s designed to do. It is a mission integrator that has teeth.
I love the F-16, but the lightning is on another level of technology. That is why we are exporting it to our friends that can afford it.
Speaking of low cost, go look at what Air Tractor did with a new close air support aircraft. That little thing is cheap and simple to operate that has good reviews so far from the field.
