It’s damn nuts, but that’s what’s happening. Hopefully athletes push back and go play somewhere willing to give them a scholarship

Why would an athlete care about getting a scholarship over cash money?

That's irrational.

Because scholarships are tax free, and tuition/room/board can be very expensive, especially at a private school or if you are out-of-state.

And outside of a small amount of players at a small amount of schools, the players aren't getting near enough NIL money for this to even be a question.

The athletes might not as much, but the NIL donors do. A guy that would cost them $500k might cost them $1 million without scholarship benefits. They aren’t going to do that when there’s a guy on scholarship riding the bench that they can process.

When the the cost of paying your own way is greater than the guaranteed NIL money.

How is that irrational? Tell me what you would prefer

You can go somewhere where you can get free tuition/room and board/meal plans, and make NIL on top of that which you would get to keep for personal use

Or

Go somewhere where you make NIL but you have to pay your own tuition/room and board/meal plans, probably using up all of the NIL you make to pay for that

Also if you're an NIL donor, would you rather have to pay extra NIL to one player to cover those costs to keep them on the team or would you rather the school pay for it via scholarship so you don't have to? Keep in mind this player would be a bench player/depth piece that you're most likely just trying to prevent going to another team, presumably a conference rival because the best players/starters will still be on scholarship.

The math just isn't mathing here my guy.
