If you are buying compost from a nursery you better sift it to get clumps out. last year I top dressed with peat and sand and sifted 2 bags of peat to remove big chinks, but I use a reel mower i have Bernuda get organic matter in your soil, you can use soil amendments I use carbon pro G from site one I use both pellet and liquid form

Since my lawn is far from perfect and I’m still leveling instead of top dressing the bit of mulch doesn’t bother me.
It’ll break down over time if it doesn’t wash away.
