I hear you.

Pennix wasn't going to fall much farther. The Raiders probably take him and there even a thread on the Saints board that they were reportedly interested in moving up for Pennix. I don't know if that's true because their tackle situation was a huge need.

if they liked Pennix that much than why sign a guy who will be 36 in August to a 4-year deal, and I think 90 million or 100 million in guaranteed money?

I'm not anti Pennix just can't wrap my head around the entire line of decisions there.

Because it’s completely senseless

What’s senseless is the Patriots picking a UNC QB. Just because the Falcons didn’t take some 2nd tier defensive player doesn’t make their pick senseless. All these picks are nothing but wishes. There was a reason defense wasn’t a priority early in the draft - and it’s because there were no premier defensive players to be had. Teams that take defensive backs and WR’s early are the stupid ones. DB’s are a dime a dozen and WR’s are as well. Look at Cincy. Great WR’s and a great QB and they fall short every year. The NFL is a QB and OLine league right now.

The frustrating part as a fan is the Falcons got insanely lucky. There was such a QB frenzy that our #8 pick was essentially the equivalent of a #1 pick for a defense needy team. They could have locked down their pass rush the next decade with a guy like Dallas Turner.

No. I actually watch ACC football and Maye is another Howell. And whoever said Dallas Turner is a premier lock down DE is laughable. If he played on any team other than Bama or UGA he would have been a 2nd rounder. The Falcons were smart not wasting a #8 pick on him.

General manager drafted a quarterback in the first round primarily cuz he was adamantly against signing Kirk Cousins to that big deal. That move came directly from the owner. The other reason at quarterback was drafted in the first round because he is black.

This was an outright and overt insubordination by The General manager. I don't see any scenario where he keeps his job.

Are you kidding? You really believe the owner, who was in the draft room, didn’t know their #1 pick was going to be Penix? Come on man. And if the GM did go rogue he would have already been fired. Blank didn’t get to his position in life by being scared to make a decision.

They picked Penix because in their view he was the best play at a position of need. End of story. That he may sit for a couple of years is why the “instant gratification” generation is freaking out. There wasn’t a defensive player on the board who was worth a top 8 pick. Defensive players were very weak this year just like QB is going to be very weak next year outside of Beck. All this will come out in the wash. The Falcons will walk away with the South behind Cousins all while the long term QB is maturing.

This roster is not nearly as good as people think it is now. They have half of a secondary, zero pass rush, an old defensive line with no proven depth (and the best player on that line is a 31 year old coming off a torn ACL), a turnstile at right tackle, and a whole lot of unproven skill players who everyone thinks are amazing for some reason.

The optimism in the offseason came from the potential to upgrade the roster to the point where they could win the division easily and win a playoff game (or maybe even two!). They took that optimism and flushed it down the toilet this weekend by drafting an old, low ceiling QB to sit for 3 years, trading up and reaching on a project defensive lineman, and blatantly refusing to address the holes at pass rush, defensive back, and offensive line. If they go 9-8, barely win a shitty division, and get nuked in a home playoff game because the defense still blows, do you consider that success? I don't.

The other problem with the Penix pick is that in the era of the rookie wage scale, you either have to be cheap or ultra elite at QB to win a Super Bowl. The Falcons will be neither for a very, very long time.

To win in this league, you need a QB, guys who protect the QB, and guys who hit the opposing QB. This franchise continues to make the most baffling, idiotic decisions like they think they're smarter than everyone else, yet their godawful win-loss record proves they are not.

Fontenot should be on the next bus back to New Orleans.

I think you're gonna end up.eating big crow on this one.

The Falcons have essentially taken care of their QB situation for the next decade.

Well, the Falcons finished 2 games back in the Division last year without a QB. Now, they have a proven one with weapons. And to talk about DB’s is just funny. DB’s are worthless in today’s game where you can’t touch a WR. All that matters is having a QB who can throw to spots. The Falcons have one now. I’m not saying they will win a playoff game, but they’ll walk away with the South by a couple of games. Turner or Odunze weren’t going to make them Super Bowl bound. Both those guys will be shown to be average.

We can talk about Penix in 2 years. By then they’ll have even more rules to protect the QB so he’ll be able to play till 40.

I think it was a good move. Cousins has injury history. I know Pennix has had them to but he is not that bad a qb… all the so called experts are just Cryin cause the falcons went against what they thought….

They definitely put their necks out there if nothing else.

I don't think enough people are really appreciating how good Penix is/can be. He was at worst, the 3rd best QB in this draft. 3 other teams wanted to jump the Falcons to get him. That is a proven fact. I think him and Caleb will be the best QB's out of this class IMO.

Welcome to the island.

nola.com
Late Thursday night, New Orleans Saints coach Dennis Allen was alerted of a report that said his team tried to trade up for Michael Penix Jr. before the Atlanta Falcons surprisingly took the quarterback with the eighth overall pick.

That wasn’t true, Allen said.

“It was never discussed that we would move up for a quarterback,” Allen said Friday when asked if the Saints inquired about trading up for the position.

I believe it was the Broncos, Vikings, and Raiders trying to move up.

NO never even considered from all that I've read.

The more likely scenario is the Falcons themselves floated this out there to cool off some of the criticism. I don't believe for a second that three other teams tried to trade up for Penix. Know why I don't believe it? Because no one did it. If those teams truly wanted to move up for him, they could have traded up with Arizona or the Chargers.
