If you think Cousins has 5 good years left the pick is idiotic.

If you don't think Cousins has 5 years then the signing was idiotic....

He’s 35 and his contract is 4 years.

Would it have been more ideal if he was 36 on a two year deal, Penix was 21, and Atlanta would have been able to trade down and get Penix at the end of the first/early second? Yeah, that would have been better, but that’s not the hand Atlanta had.

Atlanta has a 35 year old QB and the opportunity to take a QB they love and project as a franchise QB. In a league where QB is everything and you see some franchises spend 10+ years wandering the “need a QB” desert, it was a good move.

Penix is 23 and will be 24 before the season starts

his contract is 4 years.

It's guaranteed for 2 years, with an option for a 3rd and a dummy fourth year. So essentially it's a two year contract with an option for a 3rd.

It is only a four year contract in name only.

They went about convoluted, but the Falcons essentially 1. Solved their QB for the next decade, and 2. Are betting on themselves that they will win enough games that they won't be in this position to be high enough to draft a QB for the foreseeable future, which is risky, but that's the game they're playing. Which is why they took Penix now.
