As gold as it still is, could Starship Toopers be remade and improved?

In my opinion, no! This movie was made perfectly and relied heavily on its campiness. But there were still scenes that made you forget its sense of not taking itself seriously. If the film was remade one day, how could it be improved?

Has a strong female BIPOC protagonist, Marvel quips, and CGI where everything looks wet EVER improved a movie?

Because that’s what you’re going to get today.

It can’t be improved. Current moviemaking trends would in no way allow for its campy awesomeness. It’s perfect as is. Leave alone!

Yeah , make it as a straight up sci Fi movie and not a parody or satire

Zero chance it would be improved.

Starship Troopers is great as is and modern film making would make it lesser of a product than it is currently.

Movies, where a significant part of its charm is from campiness, shouldn't be remade.

They tried it with "serious" remakes of Total Recall, Robocop & Evil Dead and they all were mind-numbingly boring, despite the "upgrade" in SFX/CGI/sets/costumes/cameras/etc...

You could improve it by making it a high budget series or limited series but keeping the campiness. If the upcoming Harry Potter series is a success, I think we see a lot more movies getting remade into series rather than new movies.

It will be full of gay, diverse, lame women. John Rico will be trans.

As it stands, it is lightening in a bottle. Leave it be and let it be awesome. I fall into that group that says Hollywood has too many agendas to let a story just be a story

I was so disappointed when I saw this movie when it came out. It was too stupid and cheesy for me. Sorry but I didn't like it.

My vote is redo it.

Hard Pass...

The cast was perfect and I don't think they could redo this with a new group.

Hollywood today would never play the story straight and an attempt at parody would be even more hamfisted than the original.

The asteroid hits San Francisco instead of Buenos Aires.

And Denise Richards flies spaceships in fuzzy britches.

The animated series was 1000 better than the film. It was pure Sci-Fi awesomeness with none of the bullshite from the film.

I don't know if improved, but you could make a hell of a limited sci-fi series out of it if they played it dead serious (as was intended by the author of the book). Turning a serious novel exploring a variety of important ideas about service, government responsibilities, and societal values into a satire was kind of insulting, though I liked the move. This is not likely to happen, as Heinlein unabashedly embraced now right-wing ideas like citizenship and voting rights based on military service (though he also believed in "free love").

Not today. They'd ruin it.

any movie COULD be remade and improved, theoretically. but a true-to-the-book remake of SS (pun intended) Troopers that is a satirical take on multiple topics, some of which would be considered right wing in today's world and some which would be considered left wing, would require a level of expertise and nuance that, frankly, Hollywood is incapable of these days. they would be absolutely incapable of remaking a movie like SST that isnt just a pure bash-fest of their pseudo-elitist perception of what a conservative is, and likewise would be incapable of the slightest hint of criticism at progressivism.

You could make it a lot worse by making it truer to the source material.
