Spending a weekend in Manhattan and then wanting to explore New England ending in Kennebunkport Maine.
Thinking about taking a train from Manhattan to Boston and then working our way up the coast in a rental car from Boston ending in Kennebunkport. Would the board recommend a different route or way to travel from NYC to NE/Maine? Spending time in Boston isn’t too important to us, more interested in Salem, Coastal towns like Portsmouth and Kennebunkport.

To be honest there is not much in Salem. I would rather burn a day on the Freedom Trail in Boston* than a day in Salem. Otherwise the drive into Maine from Boston is nice once you get away from the city and diving into coastal towns is great.

*Have you been to Boston before because it's great city for tourist purposes?

Been to Boston before and that’s why I’m not looking to spend too much time there. I know Salem is underwhelming but kids have an interest in stopping there. Is the train from nyc to Boston a good option?

Portsmouth is definitely worth stopping in, but it’s a day at most. It’s a bit further on, but Portland, ME is pretty nice.

Sure. It’s about 3 hours travel time, straight from Penn Station to South Station. Fair warning though, Amtrak tickets are as expensive as flights.

If you’re renting a car in Boston, I would just rent it in NYC. No need to pay for train tickets and you can build in a stop or two along the way. Somewhere like Mystic, CT is a great little town to hit for a lunch/afternoon.

Salem is such a tourist trap but you could stop on the way up the coast

Rockport is a neat little town doable from Salem as well
