Do they now? Or do they allow the body to heal faster, maintain high strength levels, and prolong a players career?

Steroids wear the body down. Ask Mark McGwire. I’m sorry. I probably shouldn’t have said the quiet part out loud about one of the media’s darlings.

I think it's like a lot of drugs and medications - some great outcomes, some bad. Probably depends a lot on moderation, management, genetics and good ol' fashioned luck. But obviously the performance boost is worth the risk for many - become a hero, get paid and worry about the health consequences later.

Palmerio was a juicer and I don't think he ever spent a day on the DL despite playing 20 years. Same with some other players. But I think you also have cases where athletes push the limits of their body beyond the ergonomics, like these prized racehorses that break down.

There are outliers but in most cases they allow for longer careers, less impact from injuries, and faster healing and recovery. Generally the negative effects appear later in life after the professional career is over in the case of performance oriented sports like baseball. Now bodybuilders, strength athletes, pro wrestlers etc use an entirely different class/level of drugs and the effects are manufest much differently

His career is going to be a mirror image of Griffey.

I've been to one MLB game in the last decade or so and it happened to be the game where Trout injured his thumb against the Marlins and went on the DL for the 1st time in his career.
