Brian Kelly is in his 3rd year as the head coach at lsu. The DT position still being this big of an issue is 100% on him. If he hired a competent defensive staff from the beginning we wouldn’t be in this spot. If he went after DT harder in year 1 and 2 we wouldn’t be in this position. Maybe if it was first year or second year you could excuse him, but ultimately this does fall 100% on BK’s shoulders.

This is the truest take in all of this. People have been sounding the alarm about DT for 3 years. Kelly has chosen to ignore it until now, and now he can't address it because the cost doesn't align with his principles. Fine, good on him for that. But if he had addressed this for the last 3 years, he wouldn't have to face this decision. He will have to own this, and he will I am sure. Not like anything can happen to him, or should happen to him. Just a bummer situation is all.

This is some next level stupidity. Even if you make Kelly fully responsible for the 2022 class, take the time and go back and look at the top DT prospects out of Louisiana in the past three years. There aren't many and of the ones that were there LSU got. So, LSU has had to go out of state looking for DTs and it is hard to pull those from other states. Kelly came in and immediately started pulling DT's from the portal because of the absolute bare cupboard that was left by Orgeron and the fact that Louisiana doesn't seem to be producing a ton of DT talent right now.

I mean- are we not desperate for DL?

True. But the bigger question a coach has to determine is is that one year (potential) fix worth resetting the market for your roster? If you have a big time starting LB with a $200k NIL deal see you sign a rotational, average DT at a "cost" of $600k guess who is going to be in your office soon, pissed off, demanding a "raise".

As a college football fan I don't like that reality. But that IS the reality. A college HC has to be both HC and GM now. That's why Kelly emphasizes wanting to build the roster through recruiting. It's easier, and in most cases, probably a bit more cost effective to "re-sign" your own guys vs. overpaying for average players out of desperation.

These signing don't happen in a vacuum. Newtown's laws apply. For ever action there is an equal and opposite reaction.

It also doesn't help that the first DL coach left for another job in the spring before season two...forcing LSU to hire a new DL coach in May before season two...who, unfortunately, has to leave the team due to illness just 3 months later...forcing LSU to go through an entire season without a permanent DL coach until they can hire their third one in 3 years.

Just now having time to listen to this and Nakos says it will always boil down to NIL in the portal. Heard possibly 2 million being offered.

On this edition of The Bengal Tiger Podcast, Billy Embody is joined by On3 national college sports reporter Pete Nakos to break down where LSU stands with some of the top defensive tackles in the transfer portal. Can LSU reel in Damonic Williams or Simeon Barrow? Plus, LSU basketball lands Dji Bailey from Richmond out of the transfer portal.

Yep that is going to start happening more and more. I think tightening the portal could help that. Also if a player is just not producing mainly because of effort, coaches need to have the ability to cut him at anytime. If it is going in the direction of the NFL model, then start treating them like NFL players. This is a shame because we are missing the Pride of playing for your favorite school. College football as we knew it, is gone for good and I really hate it. I would take going back to the days of Bama just cheating their asses off and we did just a little cheating.

Now we're gonna have to hear about how Bo is going to develop what is currently on the roster and how Barrow is more of a fit.
I've stated on here multiple times that Barrow is my #1. Many on here have expressed him as the top get. For most, including me, Williams was #2.

I've already said to jump on the ULM kid who at worst would be rotational, and hope and pray McKinley can do something in the middle with Gilmore.

Also, that HS coach of his has become annoying as hell, just playing every school against each other in the sleaziest way possible. I am an LSU/Texas grad and I hope neither of them pay for this kid.

“Unc” is all about that paper chase. JC coach and bag man that travels the country and handles. Mullin ran him off at UF after a couple of months.

They do. A coach can dismiss a player from the team at any time. There's no employment contract or employment relationship. The only "contract" is the scholarship agreement with the school. But even those are generally 1 year renewable agreements. I suppose you could reduce it to semester by semester agreements which would allow the coach to kick a player off the team in the fall and not have the school on the hook to pay his tuition in the spring (though in most instances the player leaves the school voluntarily)

Yeah Captain that's one good thing that came from NIL and transfer portal. 10 years ago this board ruined my work productivity for 1 day. Then came early signing day. 2 days lost. Now with nil and portal endless possibilities of nonproductivity lmao

Lsu really needs to make that shift from Taf to a Collective. Facilities are not important in this Era of college athletes.
