And yet American women have never been less happier, less fulfilled, more lonely, more riddled with psychological issues, more depressed, etc than they are right now. Replacing loving and natural relationships with a “ I am woman hear me roar” box of empty platitudes, a team of therapists and 3 antidepressants is not really a good game plan for society or a woman’s sense of purpose.

They invented ludes for depressed housewives back in the 50s and 60s. Go watch Mad Men, all of the wives looked thrilled and fulfilled when their husbands were out drinking. Must’ve been great to be trapped in crappy marriages and told from a young age that you need to stay home raise kids and do nothing else. Im sure if they said they were unhappy their husbands would’ve been real sympathetic.

You can make feminist assertions and broad generalizations from pop culture all you want, but the social science doesn’t support it. Women are happier in loving relationships and with children. Women are genetically wired for it. Women aren’t genetically wired to find meaning in solo travel and cat herding and drinking a bottle of wine while watching Sex in the City alone every night. The “ I don’t need no man” mantra is a road to unhappiness.

Sure, the housewife ideal is dated. But the current model of working in the rat race and shunning traditional motherly roles that society is trying to impose isn't something to champion either.

As Pimp said, clinical depression and antidepressant drug use are at all time highs.

As with everything in life there can be a healthy balance. Women can work. Women can be mothers and take time away from work to do so. It's not an either/or scenario.
