Would this hurt LSU?

I always thought that LSU was able to recruit in-state players and have them go on TOPS, so that they could save the actual baseball scholarships to pursue our top out-of-state recruits.

So effectively, TOPS being extra scholarships that LSU could use for in-state players. Now if every team had full scholarships to use on every player on the roster, LSU loses the advantage provided by TOPS

It probably would’ve been a negative in the past, but in the NIL era and with the team now having such a national footprint it’s probably a wash.

I think the rules changed mid2000s. I could be wrong.

No, it won’t hurt LSU.

We are in the age of NIL. Tops is irrelevant now. LSU has a major advantage on most programs in terms of our major support of baseball over most.

Depends how you look at it I suppose. On the one hand, TOPS was an out for LSU to pursue out of state talent. On the other, LSU was limited in it’s ability to offer in state kids who didn’t qualify for TOPS.

IMO, having a scholarship for every roster spot helps in a pretty significant way. Now you’d have the ability to pursue the top talent across the country without having to worry about balancing the scholarships for in state kids.
