But how far back, and to what extent?
We have no idea but it is much farther than most think.

So what happened to them? Where are they? Why hasn't more survived?
People have a hard time comprehending geologic time. 10000 years is nothing. Time is undefeated.

We have guesses, there have been cases where it has been found that early explorers research that much of the current beliefs are based on were faked/embelished on to receive funding.
This isn't a good forum to discuss this. You have people here that will question damn near everything including science, based on their political beliefs etc. but think questioning academia's version of what happened thousands of years ago makes you a lunatic.

Biggest issue I have is the arrogance of archaeologists and paleontologists declaring theories about what they think happened thousands and tens of thousands of years ago as indisputable fact.
I’m all about scientific breakthroughs and new technology to help us understand what happened in the past. Keep digging and researching any way you can and hopefully we learn more. But the whole ‘shut down any opposing theories and end discussion based on consensus ’ crowd is doing a huge disservice to their own profession. The fact is we know very little, relatively, about ancient history. There’s too much conjecture being reported as fact. Time and time again, new information either casts doubt or completely changes what we thought to be true. Let hard evidence and facts speak for themselves.

I've been down this rabbit hole on YouTube. Apparently, there is a lot of competition between archeologists for the big "finds" and theories. Interesting stuff for sure but there's plenty more to learn. It's amazing how old these ancestors of modern man are.

I always find it crazy that Neanderthals were around for 300,000 years. Had religion and language. Yet left little behind.
In comparison homo saipens have only been around 150,000 years.
But the last 12,000 years are when things really took off with civilization.
