The pre-McKinley presidents in general tended to be pretty forgettable. Martin Van Buren, Chester Arthur and Benjamin Harrison seem to be the 3 most forgettable. You can find a little bit about almost every other president if you do a little googling, but those are the 3 presidents where even their Wikipedia pages basically just say “they existed.”

I mean...how many of you have really heard of the following:

Millard Fillmore
Franklin Pierce
Rutherford B. Hayes
James Garfield

Did you know Chester A Arthur was collector of customs in New York City?

Bonus points if you know the movie that came from.

Andrew Johnson should be the most forgettable. He held a grudge against the South after the war and almost got impeached by one vote.

History classes usually briefly mention Hayes’ name when talking about his controversial election, the Compromise of 1877, and the end of Reconstruction. He’s not really a contender for the least remembered president ever.

Filmore and Pierce’s names are rarely mentioned in history classes. But if you do some googling you’ll realize that some things they did as president are discussed in history books (ie Compromise of 1850, Kansas-Nebraska Act)- it’s just that the name of the presidents who signed the legislation is rarely mentioned.

With people like Van Buren, Arthur, and Benjamin Harrison, you still won’t have any idea what they did as president after reading their Wikipedia article. (The same is true of Grover Cleveland, but he’s a bit less obscure due to his inconsecutive terms.)

George HW Bush is pretty forgettable too. And he actually served a full term.

Even people who lived through his term can hardly say anything that Bush I did as president. And people who aren’t old enough to remember Bush I usually mix him up with Bush II.

These are all excellent choices for me with the exception of Rutherford B. Hayes, because I loved Young Guns when I was a kid and Billy The Kid referenced Rutherford B. Hayes several times in the mov9e

Jimmy Carter. A great great human being but most would like to forget his term.

Surprised no one has mentioned William Henry Harrison. Poor guy never even had a chance to really make an impact, as he was only in office 31 days before his death from pneumonia.
