On this day 79 years ago, one of the oddest occurrences in military history happens inside the medieval fortress of Castle Itter, when German and American soldiers teamed up in one of the most fascinating stories of the Second World War:

Yes, but his odds were better than you might think. Survivability for Sherman crews in the event of a penetrating hit was on the order of 80%, probably the best figure in the war for any tank. The same number for a Soviet T-34 crew was <20%.

Because it actually had seats. The T-34 was mostly junk that was easily mass produced. Google the insides of a T-34 and then a Sherman.
