In terms of just driving thru, New Mexico is what I imagine driving on the surface of mars to be like.

I can see that. It is also one of the most unique areas in the US. Much of the state is more or less unchanged since Europeans first set foot on it. There is more public land than a person could see in several lifetimes. It ain't for everyone though...hell, a good many people IN New Mexico despise it. I loved it but I like being alone with my thoughts....
