I don’t remember any pitchforks outside of Guillermo del Toro’s house when he walked away from The Hobbit. The initial deal was for 2 movies and Jackson added the third because he thought he had enough story to tell.

I’m pretty sure as that clip shows that he said the exact opposite. You can tell with the final battle that they had no idea what they were doing in it. The only real thing that was important there was to give Thorin an impactful death, which they succeeded on that front.
