8-10 years ago people would have said to pay more than $300k for any home would be absolutely stupid.
A decade ago, the median home price in Houston was $192k (2014, single family).

Now (2023), it is $330k.

I had to do this to get a car loan last year. I had changed jobs within that 3 years so it was easier to give them tax returns than it was to go back and find pay stubs from an old job.

I feel bad when republicans say that minority groups would prefer to have hard work and dignity instead of getting checks and slangin

If I didn’t flunk the paper bag test I’d get an ebt card and drag up so fast. Who cares about dignity

A decade ago, the entire population of California hadn't decided to move to Houston. We're not really comparing apples to apples here. Still, like I said people don't buy the "average house." They buy the house in their price range in the area where they want to live.

If I could stop people from California from moving to the south and screwing up red states, believe me I would in a heartbeat.

I got a house less than 10 years ago and because I didn’t have an old cell phone bill to show them they recommended I go buy a 4 wheeler on credit to build a credit history

I think they asked for a couple weeks of pay stubs too

I eventually got the loan without buying the 4 wheeler

$200k was the amount that was given by the people saying houses aren't affordable. You can't complain about people finding houses in the range given.

again moving the goalpost on the argument

this is what pooch said that i responded to with "ill humor you, say i want to live in Houston"

Again, I ask to whoever wants to answer, tell me where you want to live or work and let’s do an exercise and see how good or bad it really is.

Then give me a hypothetical. Young you just starting out, where do you want to live?

Let’s do a case study for you specifically. Where do you want to live? Let’s see if there is any reasonably priced homes in the are and if not, how far would you have to commute.

i don't know where he got the 200k number

he set some arbitrary number then gets pissy when people poke holes in his shitty apartments

They keep picking exceptions and not the overwhelming norms on average.

Extremely expensive real estate skews those averages tremendously. First-time home buyers aren't buying the averages anyway. Most purchase "starter" homes, as they should.

This is a Baton Rouge based-board, so maybe our views are skewed a litte. From a quick Zillow search, you can have your pick of cute little 3/2's between 200k-250k all day long.

Is this "less" house than 5 years ago? Yes. Are they still viable options for living? Definitely. And people are absolutely getting mortgages.

First time homebuyers shouldn’t be allowed to buy homes because they’d rather buy 400k dsld shitboxes built on somebody’s nice cow pasture instead of buying a well built sub 200k fixer up in the almost ghetto or in a God’s waiting room boomer neighborhood

Smashing a pink bathroom with a sledgehammer should be a required rite of passage in your 20s

What the boomers tend to not realize, most of us in this thread are doing perfectly fine.

I have a two physician household. We are not the ones who this market impacts.

All this situation does is cause societal, political, and social upheaval.

And, no, there is no fixing it at this point. It has been too foregone for the past 20 years.

You boomers better hope it somehow magically fixes itself because those insane bastards yall raised are going to come for everything yall have, including your retirement.

I think what’s gonna happen in our lifetimes is that property and inheritance tax will get out of control to take away the only good thing us non food stampers have, which is the potential to receive and create inheritance

I wish I could’ve been born some time when America wasn’t falling apart. Or maybe be born as one of those child soldier kids like in blood diamond

Sure are a lot of “I’m doing just fine” posts in a thread about how impossible it is to avoid living in mama and daddy’s guest bedroom.

Let's see an average starter home in the Houston area that would be affordable for a single income family in their 20's.

That's most of the argument here, a young, single income family (or even a single person) can no longer buy a starter home whereas Boomers did it fairly easily in their 20's, even with just a high school diploma.

here's another one. googled "best places for young people". found an article stating Durham, NC becasue"

1. Durham, N.C.
Grade: A
Why it is great for millennials*: The number of available jobs in Durham is almost three times higher than the average of the cities analyzed. At the same time, the cost of living is 6 percent lower than the national average, and it ranked in the top 15 for ease of commute. Durham is also in the top five for the number of other young people (ages 20 to 29) living there.

now, this article was from 2017 so i googled it again and Raleigh/Durham is 11 so still pretty good. Say you wanted to live here but you need a "starter home". Again, it's going to be tough getting a lower priced house in Durham for our proposed budget of $200k. But if you are willing to spread your search out, it's listed as a 1/1 for but has 3 or 4 bedrooms per the description and photos. $185k in Oxford, NC, 32 min from Durham city center, nice piece of land.

Can't wait for the excuses on this one...

203 Peace St, Oxcord, NC

Seems like crime is pretty high there and whites are 34% of the population.

21% poverty rate

And you're still paying $185k for a fixer upper. The median household income in Durham is only $78,105.

This property has a lot of character and has lots of potential for it's new owner.

Looks like some flipper bought it and added some nice cosmetics and is trying to unload it.

Congratulations, you found a 1 bedroom, 1 bath house where the attic was turned into rooms but cant be classified as bedrooms because of no closets. Good thing its in a school district where the schools are on par with McKinley High. Also way to put people right in the middle of a high crime area ya goomba.

According to recent studies, its violent crime rate is nearly double that of the US average at 49.1 compared to 22.7. Property crime in Oxford is also well above the US average at 84.2 compared to 35.4, making it an unsafe place to live for many people. Source

Why not look at the averages instead of finding the outlier? Average 1st time home purchase in the US last summer was $243k Source. Average 1st time homebuyer household income was $107k this past fall Source.

If you adjust for inflation, the median income of Americans has only increased by about 45% from 1967. The median house sale price, however, has increased by 104%.

I am unsure why its hard for boomers in here to grasp that wages have not increased with the cost of living. Your obstinance to this is part of the reason people hate boomers.
