Tools. Every man needs a basic set of tools and a tool chest to keep them in. Tools are expensive and are not usually something that 18 year olds think about buying themselves. Your son may not appreciate this gift today but he definitely will eventually.

Keep a list of gift ideas in your phone for each of your loved ones. Whenever they drop a hint, or express a need, or you get an idea for a gift, jot it down where it will be saved. I’ve been doing this for 15 years or so, and it has helped me a lot.

Yes, I do this as well, makes gift buying easy.

Since the OP said he has a camping trip planned, I won't recommend a trip. I'll second the Saddleback leather wallet. Or maybe something fun he wants for college, like a new lap top?

Also - framed copy and a wallet size of "If" by Rudyard Kipling - first saw it on a friend's bathroom mirror - his grandfather gave him one for the mirror to make sure he read it every morning, and gave the framed copy to always have visible in his room - words to live by

We've taken our kids on trips of their interest (within budgetary reasons!) for milestone events like graduations, turning 30 etc. We gave them a budget, gave some input on what we'd want to do as well (since we're paying for it) and worked down the list until we found a location we could all enjoy.
