Penning needs someone flanked to his left and right on the OL …. to address his poor lateral movement and play recognition.

Playing at Guard means a lineman needs to pass directly over Penning: no option to take a long path around him to the QB.

Does he play LG or RG ?
RG is where your strongest run blocker plays. Penning is a mauler as a run blocker. I remember at one point in the season Penning had a 90+ PFF rating as a run blocker.

Who then plays LG ?
It’s either Ruiz or McCoy.
If Ruiz plays left guard…. we can hope his average play at RG maybe translates to average LG play.

Another Option: If the younger Ruiz moves to center.. his natural position… he has greater upside…again, he’s younger than McCoy.
If McCoy moves to LG… I believe his play will be much much better than the average play of Ruiz at left guard or right guard.

This is not optimum but it’s working within the players you currently have on the roster.

Fuaga is your right tackle and they must find a Left Tackle… it ain’t Penning.

This isn't a problem for Penning, he's extremely athletic

play recognition

This however is a major problem.

It’s not that easy to just move to guard like people think. Penning’s best and only chance is winning the LT spot. Athleticism is his last problem, he’s extremely athletic. It’s his technique and confidence that are shite. Ideally you go into week 1 with a starting OL of:

LT: Penning
LG: Saldiveri
C: McCoy
RG: Ruiz
RT: Fuaga

I've wondered for awhile if he could really develop if he spent way less practice time being an unrepentant a-hole trying to piss people off and get in fights (and get himself hurt) and more time cultivating actual skills that will help him adapt at this level.

I do not understand this interest people have a replacing our pro bowl center with Ruiz. This "natural position" crap is nonsense. Ruiz has played guard more than he ever played center, and McCoy had played center more than he ever played guard. Our OL has enough problems without creating new ones.

If Saldiveri is a guard, he’s 6’6”
Penning is 6’7”

Would be an interesting dynamic on the interior OL. Not sure there’s been a taller guard duo in the league

If Penning is the left tackle, the quarterbacks better take out life insurance.
