I told a young friend whose inner circle was exploring the meltdown possibilities that he should find likeminded and trustworthy people and buy old/cheap shrimp boats. Refit with water purification mechanisms and fill the hull with foam to ensure flotation in the event of long range gunfire and the pantry with nonperishables. Entertain business guest and family/friends as a perk (fishing, hunting, tourist experiences, etc.) and write it off. Forming a circle and anchoring in the middle of Lake Maurepas for 3 months after the power grid goes down would give one a survival edge, as many of the desperate heathen ("One Second After" version) would go away because of bad water and mortal combat/deprivation in a few weeks. If I were young, I would do this and enjoy the boat regardless of any speculative nightmare scenarios, just like any houseboat. The Marsh would be a good alternative as well, nws the storm dynamic.

Crazy stuff. But it makes a normal/mundane life more exciting.

I've been sailing for over 40 years. If it got that bad, I could sail away if I could get down there. Don't have to worry about gas in a sailboat and if I want to go to another continent, I could. That's always been on the table. But as I get older I'm realizing I'll probably have to ride it out right here and that got me thinking about this subject more specifically.

Every area is different. The one I'm in I think would weather it.
