This is a good podcast with a lady who usually gets interviewed for a lot of these articles:
Nature's Archive Episode 95

She's studied them her entire adult life.

I'm in La., New Orleans to be specific and have not even heard on to date.

I know it's more a rural thing because as a kid I would hear them when out in the country when they emerged, but not so much when in the city.

I should've gone into a 6 figure life of tracking dragonflies 30 years ago. Seems cush.

I literally thought I was going crazy. I walked around my house trying to identify the source of this mysterious noise that almost sounds mechanical (to me it sounds like a belt whine on a machine). I walked around my yard and could find nothing as the source. It seemed it was coming from all directions (yet still far away).

BTW, these sound nothing like regular cicadas. These things sound like they are screaming - it's a really high pitched sound and is nothing like I have ever heard before. It sounds like a belt whine or perhaps like a UFO landing. Seriously, it's really weird.

In north central Alabama we have had the tremendously loud whirring sound going on 8 days now. As they are emerging around almost every tree in the yard and neighborhood, our neighborhood’s dogs have been gobbling them by the hundreds. My dog Zeus easily has eaten 400 total himself on our walks each day. They must be full of protein. He likes them right out of the ground when shiny and juicy and right when they are trying to fly and are very slow to get moving. Fully mature? Not so much.

Go to this site, and below the first pic of a cicada is a play button that says "Song Type: Call". Hit the play button and you'll hear what a single cicada sounds like. The constant drone is all of them chorusing. Occasionally you can pick out a single call that isn't quite synced up with the others.
Cicada Call

There is another species that could be mixed in. It looks almost identical, but has a noticeably different sound to help them distinguish between each other for mating. The males are the only ones that sing.

That's where I am, Shelby county airport exit has them everywhere.

I'm not new construction, on 20 acres that's been undisturbed for a long time.

Same w/ me. Arrived in SWArky and looked around for the noise. The high tension wires were shaking in the wind and I assumed it was just an electrical buzz. So wrong.

Interestingly enough, the eastern cicada killer wasp isn't all that active during the emergence of most periodical cicadas. They hit their stride in July and August, and if you think about it, that makes sense. Cicada killers are annual. They couldn't survive by relying on the emergence of periodical cicada that emerge every 13 or 17 years. They target annual cicadas that emerge every year.
