CUSA is a better football and basketball conference than the MAC even with the recent FCS callups.
I haven't whipped out the Sagarin ratings or anything, but I do remember hearing (and probably even saying) shite like that back when USM was still in CUSA and in hindsight it's total crap. Anything CUSA is "better at" compared to anyone else in FBS is noise. The real signal tells us that CUSA was a parking spot for a few legit schools, like Louisville and TCU, and for everyone else it's a program-killer. I saw it at USM and I feel bad for the semi-legitimate programs that have burned bridges with the Sun Belt and/or MAC and can't get out.
CUSA was a slow-motion death sentence for USM from its initial conception. Howard Schnellenberger trashed CUSA and USM when it was created, and we despised him for it, but he was 100% right. USM wound up in CUSA because it was convenient for our administration. Very difficult scheduling tasks suddenly became very easy. That's why USM wound up in CUSA (and never made a serious effort to get out until very recently) in spite of our entire identity being succeeding as a football independent.
Most of us resisted the Sun Belt move until it just became so painfully obvious that it was necessary, but the Sun Belt is 100% better. So is the MAC. CUSA is a joke, and in fact I don't even think of it as a real conference.
A real conference would have penalized Louisville, TCU, etc. for leaving, and there was never anything in CUSA's bylaws to allow for that. That meant that our AD had put USM into a "conference" in which it was a second-class citizen from day one. We figured it out years, even decades later, when people started talking about "muh exit fee windfall."
CUSA and the people who put USM in it can go frick themselves.

quote:I'm assuming you meant USM and Marshall?! Which I addressed. The FCS callups are what made the SBC relevant in football, and then they added two of the ones who destroyed CUSA, and brought in ODU (one of the market adds) in order to get JMU.
Left out JMU, USA, ODU and marshell
Outside of the two Western schools (UTEP and NMSU) CUSA is about the same geographically as the SBC, and though not as strong for football top to bottom is at worst a wash in the Olympic sports. Will be interesting to see what happens. A world where the outlying two leave for the MWC and the SBC and CUSA merge East and West isn't too far away. Especially once the P2 depart the NCAA and the new FBS realigns and takes shape.

I think the Sunbelt has made great strides in the last decade. Out of all of the G5 conferences they have made the most improvements and I think it will get even better. The American is basically the old CUSA and the MWC can’t make many moves besides bringing in the PAC 12 rejects.
I might be biased with me being a TXST alum but I think TXST can be in contention this year for the G5 playoff spot and that will be a big win for the SBC

yuck, that conference is pretty gnarly.
Goes back to when Banowski was commissioner. Most commissioners try to make their conference better. He always tried to help members get into a better conference.

This
It was a joke the first few years with UNT winning the league with a losing record.

MVC to D1 football for Mo St is a move up.
they are desperate, they know Lindenwood has plans on being full div 1 in next decade, and they don't want to be the after thought in state.
A,ways been Missouri, Mo st, then Semo, umkc, etc
SLU already pissed it all away going to a-10.

the sun belt rules
Rules…..what exactly?! It’s hilarious that you think the Belt is better than other g5 conferences. It’s all the same pile at the end of the day. Lol
Actually, the Mizz St is a solid add for CUSA. I can think of a lot worse

SLU was never going to bring back football regardless of conference affiliation.
